Strong Center
Zen Master Seung Sahn always taught that we need to have a strong center. But how do we develop a strong center? More importantly, how do we use this strong center in our daily life to help ourselves and others? I want to share a case of one of our students with you.

Outside and Inside Incenses
After one Tuesday night's sitting, a student asked Sifu : Someone told me that if we want to communicate with Buddha, we need to offer very high-class agarwood incense. Is that true?
Sifu : Zen teaches us that 'Mind is Buddha'. If you want to communicate with your 'Mind', do you need to light high-class incense for your Buddha within?
The student was shocked to hear this and didn't know how to respond. After a few seconds, she said : Thank you for waking me up to this incense issue!
Commentary:
There are two kinds of incense. Outside incense is to purify the air we breathe. Inside incense is our pure True Nature. Outside incense depends on outside conditions which have appearing and disappearing. The incense of our True Nature is always bright and clear. Whenever our mind can let go of any kind of strong attachment and be humble with an open heart, and with a mind for others, this incense will permeate from our mind within. This we cannot find outside of us. This is the true offering of incense to Buddha.
With harmony in family, all things will prosper Without wanting, everything can be attained
Zen Master Seung Sahn opened his first zen center in
Providence, Rhode Island. The area was fairly violent with drunken brawls and
knife fights. The atmosphere was unhappy. At that time Zen Master Seung Sahn
was totally independent and self-financed. He started everything from zero.
There was no furniture except for a small kitchen table and a few wooden
chairs.
One day a Buddha from Korea arrived in a large wooden box.
It was broken into about 15 pieces. Without hesitation, and with a joyful mind,
Zen Master Seung Sahn started piecing the Buddha together meticulously and
patiently, converting emptiness back into form. From this starting point, we
now have over 100 zen centers around the world with many students practicing
the Dharma together, making harmony, and helping each other.
Now our situation in Hong Kong is similar to this broken
Buddha statue. Our society is broken with different strong opinions. Many
families are also broken. The world situation is also like this. Nobody wants
to put it all down and listen to each other and find harmony. Many people are
just holding to their one cracked piece and think that this is it. One of Zen
Master Seung Sahn's greatest teachings is keeping 'don't know' mind and 'just
do it' to fix any situation. This 'don't know' glue can close the spaces
between us and put back together the broken pieces. Strength comes from being together
and from not splitting among ourselves. Behind there is no selfish intention.
Only how can I help?
The horse is trotting away, and the goat is entering the
gate of 2015. Sifu sincerely wishes that we all make a vow together to use this
'don't know' glue treasure. The ingredients of this glue include an open heart
and the putting down of our strong attachments to our opinions and emotions. At
the same time, we respect each other and make harmony. This will be the
greatest gift to our families, our colleagues, our friends, our communities,
and eventually to our world, in the Year of the Goat.

Fresh breeze with every step
Zen Master Dae Kwan
There is a Zen teaching:
If you want to understand the realm of
Buddha,
Keep a mind clear like space.
So let go and do not keep any thinking
or external desires,
Let your mind go any place, with no
hindrance.
Fresh breeze appears with every step.
These five lines have a very significant teaching and
application to our everyday life. I have a sharing to illustrate this.

For the Year of the Dragon
In 1976, the Year of the Dragon, Zen Master Seung Sahn had written a poem like this :
Here is Jin, which is Truth.
Jin Song means True Pine Tree-
True Pine Tree has no roots.
Jin Kwang means True Light-
True Light has no shadow.
Jin Um means True Sound-
That is the sound of the flute with no holes.
What does it mean?
If you find the dragon's tooth hair
Then show it to me;
Then I'll tell you that 1976
Is the year of the Dragon.
2012 is also a dragon year. How can the above poem help us in this year of 2012?

“There is no place for you to stay”
In Tang Dynasty, there was a lineage of Zen Buddhism called the “Ox Head” School, which came from the 4th Patriarch Dao Xin. In this lineage there was a Hak Lin Zen Master. One day, a monk knocked on the door and looked for Hak Lin Zen Master. Zen Master asked, “Who is this?” The monk answered, “Monk.” Zen Master replied, “Not to say it’s a monk, even Buddha came I don’t entertain.” The monk asked, “Why not?” Zen Master replied, “There is no place for you to stay.” After hearing this, the monk got enlightened right away. What insight we get from this kong-an?
Very often, we like to depend on and attach to certain people, possessions, events and situations. Being attached to things outside us not only cannot help us, it will make our greed, anger and ignorance grow, mislead our direction in life. It is like a dog chasing a bone, always chasing something outside. Meditation is to train our inner self to be independent, not to rely on anyone or situation. The job of Zen Center is to help people who come to practice, take away our attachments and desires inside, attain our true self, and to live a correct life.
Someone asked me why I never feel tired even my work is so busy. Actually I do feel tired. And when I am tired, I go to sleep and take a rest. Once I have enough rest I can continue to work. But many people even though they are very tired, they cannot sleep at night. Why? Because they have opened the door of their mind, and let external situations come in and stay there. Their mind is occupied and of course they cannot sleep, and they do not have inner peace. This does not mean that we do not handle all the good and bad situations and other worldly matters, but after we have handled them, we should not stay attached to it.
In this world, very often we have many sudden visitors knocking on our door: stress, anger, disappointments, love and hate, winning and losing, desires, inferiority complex, arrogance, etc. If we do not open the door and entertain them, they do not have a chance to stay at your home and affect your daily life. If we are not mindful and have already opened the door, we have to ask this visitor to leave right away. How can we do that? Only keep “don’t know” mind with these visitors, put all your energy on the you are doing, no attachment and not for ourselves. If you are not attached to your problems and worries then you will have concentration. If you are not attached to your own views you will have mindfulness. If you are not attached to the housing prices, you will have a clear mind to invest. If you are not attached to the disagreements in the family, you have to capacity to transform it into a warm and loving family.
2011 will be the year of rabbit, I wish everybody can be alive and energetic like a rabbit, full of hope. Let’s put our efforts together and make our hopes come true. Let us not to be like the rabbit in the story of the race with the turtle, loose ourselves because of our pride. Please take good care of your mind, and do not let good, bad situations and negative emotions occupy your mind; just like Hak Lin Zen Master said, “There is no place for you to stay.” Do not open the door to anyone, the monk, even Buddha. Then we can attain what the Sixth Patriarch said, “Not thinking good, not thinking bad, this is the original face.” And we can attain our true nature, save all beings from suffering.
