Outside and Inside Incenses
After one Tuesday night's sitting, a student asked Sifu : Someone told me that if we want to communicate with Buddha, we need to offer very high-class agarwood incense. Is that true?
Sifu : Zen teaches us that 'Mind is Buddha'. If you want to communicate with your 'Mind', do you need to light high-class incense for your Buddha within?
The student was shocked to hear this and didn't know how to respond. After a few seconds, she said : Thank you for waking me up to this incense issue!
Commentary:
There are two kinds of incense. Outside incense is to purify the air we breathe. Inside incense is our pure True Nature. Outside incense depends on outside conditions which have appearing and disappearing. The incense of our True Nature is always bright and clear. Whenever our mind can let go of any kind of strong attachment and be humble with an open heart, and with a mind for others, this incense will permeate from our mind within. This we cannot find outside of us. This is the true offering of incense to Buddha.
外在與內在的香
某星期二坐禪共修後,一位學生向師父求教:
學生:有人對我說,如我們想跟佛陀感應,便要向佛陀供養最高級的沉香。這是真的嗎?
師父:禪宗教「即心是佛」。如你要跟你的「心」感應,你要為你內心的佛燃點高級的香嗎?
學生聽後一愕,不懂回應。過了一會兒,她説:「多謝師父讓我從這香的問題中覺醒!」
評論:
香有內與外兩種:外在的香可以淨化我們呼吸的空氣;內在的香即是我們的清淨自性。
外在的香依靠外緣而有生滅。自性的香永遠明亮和清晰。當我們的心能放下一切執著、以謙卑及開放的胸襟為其他人服務,這自性香便會從內心滲透出來,不假外求。這是向佛供香的真義。
With harmony in family, all things will prosper Without wanting, everything can be attained
Zen Master Seung Sahn opened his first zen center in
Providence, Rhode Island. The area was fairly violent with drunken brawls and
knife fights. The atmosphere was unhappy. At that time Zen Master Seung Sahn
was totally independent and self-financed. He started everything from zero.
There was no furniture except for a small kitchen table and a few wooden
chairs.
One day a Buddha from Korea arrived in a large wooden box.
It was broken into about 15 pieces. Without hesitation, and with a joyful mind,
Zen Master Seung Sahn started piecing the Buddha together meticulously and
patiently, converting emptiness back into form. From this starting point, we
now have over 100 zen centers around the world with many students practicing
the Dharma together, making harmony, and helping each other.
Now our situation in Hong Kong is similar to this broken
Buddha statue. Our society is broken with different strong opinions. Many
families are also broken. The world situation is also like this. Nobody wants
to put it all down and listen to each other and find harmony. Many people are
just holding to their one cracked piece and think that this is it. One of Zen
Master Seung Sahn's greatest teachings is keeping 'don't know' mind and 'just
do it' to fix any situation. This 'don't know' glue can close the spaces
between us and put back together the broken pieces. Strength comes from being together
and from not splitting among ourselves. Behind there is no selfish intention.
Only how can I help?
The horse is trotting away, and the goat is entering the
gate of 2015. Sifu sincerely wishes that we all make a vow together to use this
'don't know' glue treasure. The ingredients of this glue include an open heart
and the putting down of our strong attachments to our opinions and emotions. At
the same time, we respect each other and make harmony. This will be the
greatest gift to our families, our colleagues, our friends, our communities,
and eventually to our world, in the Year of the Goat.

家和羊羊興 無求事事成
崇山禪師於羅德島Providence成立了美國第一所禪中心。禪中心所在的區域並不太平,經常有人醉酒鬧事,甚至持刀打架,氣氛很不愉快。那時候,禪師完全獨立,自資經營,一切皆是從零開始。初時,禪中心除了一張小廚桌及幾張木椅外,沒有其他傢俱。一天,一個大木箱載著一尊佛像從韓國運抵禪中心。但木箱內的佛像碎成了十五件。當時,禪師毫不猶豫,帶著歡喜心,仔細並且耐心地將佛像修補。從空到有,佛像最終回復了原狀。由此開始,我們現在於全球有超過一百所禪中心,很多禪子因而能夠一起修習佛法,創造和諧,自利利他。

晚間交響樂的修練:呼呼呼呼呼! ─
2014 年世界一花之旅,是第十屆了!這次是回到韓國,有來自十六多個國家國際觀音
禪的同修們,一起踏上這共修的旅程。
到了麻谷寺旁邊的 Buddhist Cultural Centre,安排了我們三人同住一房間。深夜醒來時,
發現不見了其中來自美國的同房 Misty。奇怪,連被鋪都不見了!我起來急忙的去找,
不會是到了外頭吧?無可能,怎會是連牀也不見了!原來,這同房搬到了浴室去睡。
因為她不習慣與他人同房,而且一點聲音也會令她不能入睡。第二天早上起來,和Misty 問這樣是否會令她很不舒服,我心內很是難過。但 Misty 卻歡天喜地的說沒問題
啊,她睡得很安穩,而且她很享受那 VIP 房間,但她不想因搬到浴室去睡而令我們感
覺不安。心底內,大家都是彼此的關心,沒有一點怨言。
這幾天,我們三人都相處融洽,沒有因晚間的交響樂而睡不著,或起煩惱。相反我們
互相的體諒反而成為好友。本來可以是一個壞的處境,但因為大家都能回到「不知」
的心,只有互相的關心諒解,沒有半點怨氣,我們反而成為了莫逆之交。為甚麼禪師
說壞的處境是好的處境?因為我們有「不知」的藥,「完全放下」的維他命,我們能
用這些藥轉化這不好的處境。
我們這三姊妹,「呼呼呼呼」的,晚上睡得安好,早上就像鮮花一般,綻然盛放。晚
間的交響樂,「呼呼呼呼」就好像是社會上現在這麼多出現的聲音,有贊成,有反對,
但是若果只是觀照的心,不起好壞,我們仍可睡得安樂,安然渡過這漫長的黑夜。
香港,正處於一個極挑戰性的時刻,亦是「世界一花」精神出現的時候!
ZZZ,呼(高音),呼(低音),呼(高音)! 這是甚麼?

元道心
同學分享
很少和大家在禪院相遇,除了有些開示場合之外。但我也是靜靜的來,悄悄的走,因為沒有熟悉的朋友,孤獨的坐在一角而已!然而,今次的旅程,我認識了大家,終於不再陌生!這是我的大躍進!遺憾的是沒有跟各位多拍照留念。
會議上令我最感動, 是某禪師轉述崇山禪師的開示說,他死後要馬上到地獄,目的是有更多眾生等著去救⋯⋯
崇山禪師的大願,實不是文字或說話能表達我們對他的敬佩!難怪大禪師的禪弟子來自世界各地,有如恒河沙數⋯⋯

這是我第二次跟隨襌院參予世界一花會議,感覺很熟悉,可能地點是在韓國, 好有回鄉探親的感覺!
旅程第二日去到華溪寺,真正感覺到自己實在非常掛念崇山禪師,掛念他的禪棒,掛念他的笑容,掛念他的大喝一聲,掛念佢簡單而直接的英文,掛念他可愛的表情!
崇山禪師,感恩多年前有機會參加你多個禪學講座,感恩你的教法,Only don’t know! Don't
check! Just do it! Who am I? 你的教法,改變了我一生,令我能在日常生活中解決不少困難。
崇山禪師,感恩你! 亦感恩師父把你教法一直教導我們好好運用!

“How may I help you?”
In the past, when Sifu visited Luang Por, she would explain to him Zen Master Seung Sahn’s teachings, as recorded in the Compass of Zen. Luang Por appreciated Zen Master Seung Sahn’s teaching very much.
One time, a Hong Kong student asked Luang Por: “Do you understand Zen Master Seung Sahn’s teaching?”
Upon hearing this, Luang Por immediately stood up, placed his palms together and said: “How may I help you?”
Comment:
The Buddha gave us 84,000 teachings, and there are different schools of Buddhism, such as Mahayana, Theravada and Tibetan Buddhism. Zen Master Seung Sahn used to give this example: if you want to go from Hong Kong to Beijing, you may walk or take a car, a train, or an airplane. The tools are different, but the destination is the same. For a true practitioner these traditions are not a hindrance, because these traditions are pointing directly to the mind. This mind is for all beings and is not about my way.
「我可以怎樣幫助你?」
以前,師父到泰國探望Luang Por時,都會為他解說崇山禪師的教法,Luang Por對禪師的教法十分讚嘆。
有一次,有位香港學生問Luang Por:「其實你明白崇山禪師的教法嗎?」
聽後,Luang Por即時起立問訊道:「我可以怎樣幫助你?」
評論:
佛陀開示八萬四千種法門,而佛教亦有漢傳、南傳及藏傳等不同傳承及宗派。就好像崇山禪師經常舉的例子,從香港去北京,你可以走路、乘汽車、火車又或者飛機,工具雖然不同,目的地卻是一樣。對一個真正有修持的人,不同門派並非障礙,因為各派的宗旨都是直指人心,這心就是為眾生,而不為自己。

青山疊疊彌陀窟
韓國之旅,來自亞歐美的禪子相聚一刻,甚至已往生的禪子,也透過相片或視訊與大家連結。七天眨眼消逝,回到香港,各人各自忙碌。上班,佔中,反佔中,爭論之聲不斷,世界本如是。
華溪寺的美食,修德寺的風光,麻谷寺的流水,芙蓉庵的大悲咒,無上寺的法會,曹溪寺的早課,在此時此,都只能轉化成早課念誦的一句:「青山疊疊彌陀窟」。
記得法會當天,下起大雨。司儀說當年滿空禪師寫下「世界一花」四字,啟發了大禪師創立「世界一花會議」。
記得 「世界一花會議」最後的表演,既有傳統韓國歌舞、鼓藝,也有西式爵士、街舞。大眾更跟隨搖滾樂而在台下前方舞動:有禪師,也有在家人;有韓國的大嬸,也有歐洲的指導師。一切都讓我回味。

Habit of the Tongue
Chung Shim Sunim, a sharing at Su Bong Zen Monastery
After I became a nun in Hwa Gye Sa Temple and practiced there for a year, a senior monk told me: “After the summer retreat, you will become Zen Master Seung Sahn’s attendant.” I was shocked to hear this because, to me, Dae Seon Sa Nim was high above — someone I could not get close to. I said: “I cannot be his attendant. I don’t know anything.” But the senior monk said: “No problem. You will be fine.” On the first day, I went to Zen Master Seung Sahn’s room and bowed to him. He was very enthusiastic and happy and said: “Don’t worry, no problem. Just relax.”

我於華溪寺出家,修行了約一年後,有一天,總務法師跟我說:「夏安居完結後,你去當崇山大禪師的待者。」我當時十分震驚,因為對我來說禪師是高高在上,不是常常能親近的。我說:「我不能做禪師的待者!我什麼也不懂。」但總務法師只是說:「沒有問題,你可以做到的。」成為待者的第一天,我到禪師的房間向他頂禮。禪師很熱情、很高興的跟我說:「不用擔心,没有問題的。放輕鬆點。」

For each and every day until he was sixty years old, Zen Master Seung Sahn would do one thousand prostrations every day. He would get up a couple of hours before everyone else at the Zen Centre and do nine hundred prostrations by himself. Then, after everyone got up for morning practice, he would join them for the daily one hundred and eight prostrations.

One day in Korea, I was travelling with Dae Soen Sa Nim in the car. I said to him, “I want to go back to Poland.” Dae Soen Sa Nim answered, “That’s only your thinking.” He made his point, that thinking is no good.
Then I thought if I expressed my feelings he will allow me to go, so I said, “But I feel I have to go back to Poland.” Then immediately, Dae Soen Sa Nim turned to me and shouted so loudly with such full volume that it seemed the car windshield almost cracked: “FEELING IS THINKING!”
That was the end of the conversation.
